World Championship finalist was ushered away from Crucible after forgetting protocol

It was a moment to forget for the World Championship finalist

Jak Jones cannot be too disappointed with his 2025 World Championship first-round exit to eventual winner Zhao Xintong after seeing the way he dismantled greats such as Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Williams en route to the title.

Jones reached the final last year, losing to Kyren Wilson. During that match-up, the Welshman was left red-faced when a spectator had to guide him backstage. Despite a valiant comeback after an early deficit, Jones couldn't prevent Wilson from securing his first triple crown title.

Jones, known as the Silent Assassin, faced a daunting task after losing the first seven frames of the final. However, the now 31-year-old gradually closed the gap on Wilson, hanging on until the last session on Monday.

With Wilson just one frame away from victory, Jones extended the match by making it 17-12. An interval was then called, allowing both players to regroup before resuming the gruelling contest.

However, Jones appeared to miss the memo as he walked over to the table and sat down. A slightly awkward moment ensued before a member of the audience guided him backstage.

When play resumed, Jones continued to put pressure on Wilson, who may have been concerned about his maiden world title when the underdog won two more frames to make it 17-14

Wilson finally clinched his win in the 32nd frame, breaking down in tears and hugging his family. "My mum and dad have remortgaged and sacrificed their whole lives to get me here," he confessed to BBC Two.

Following an intense and emotional victory, the sports star couldn't contain his excitement as he said: "I have dreamed of this moment - it was so nice to have the family there and let out emotions, because we have been on a real rollercoaster of a journey since I was six years old. I have given everything, I held myself together, kept myself composed and Jak fought and fought and made it so difficult for me."

Despite the setback, his opponent displayed sheer sportsmanship, graciously commenting: "Congratulations to Kyren and his family. They deserved it so much. An unbelievable tournament for me."

Reflecting on his journey in the tournament, the runner-up further added: "A month ago, I was twitching in my first qualifying match. I am happy with that. I thought I would try my best and see what happens but Kyren is solid and has a good all-round game. It wasn't to be."

Following his significant win, Wilson soared up the world rankings, claiming the third spot, thanks to a staggering £500,000 prize fund. Meanwhile, his opponent Jones also had reasons to celebrate as he walked away with an impressive £200,000, marking the most substantial earning of his professional stint.

However, Wilson struggled during his title defence this year, Chinese youngster Lei Peifan in the opening round.

Jones was also dumped out in the opening round against eventual winner Zhao.
