Steve Davis said he can't understand 'weird' Ronnie O'Sullivan - 'It's stupid'

Steve Davis still can't wrap his head around Ronnie O'Sullivan and his Class of '92 counterparts' long-term success at the snooker table, with their dominance continuing at the Crucible

Steve Davis admitted his bewilderment at Ronnie O'Sullivan's continued brilliance. The retired snooker star described his fellow world championship winner as an "enigma" of the sport, with the Rocket targeting a record-breaking eighth Crucible crown.

O'Sullivan is three frames away from another semi-final at the World Snooker Championships, taking a 10-6 lead over Si Jiahui into the evening session at the tournament. The seven-time champ has been a dominant force in snooker for decades, creating the iconic Class of '92 group alongside John Higgins and Mark Williams.

This trio has been known as the most successful group in snooker, winning a combined 100 ranking titles, 39 Triple Crown titles, and 14 world championships. Welshman Williams edged out his Scottish rival Higgins in their quarter-final clash on Wednesday.

The pair gave fans a true Crucible classic that went to a deciding frame. O'Sullivan is on course to join Williams in the semis, albeit on the opposite side of the draw.

It'll come as no surprise to Davis, as the six-time world champion has been full of praise for Williams and O'Sullivan previously, telling retired snooker star Stephen Hendry that the duo are "exceptional" stars of the sport.

During a conversation on Hendry's Cue Tips YouTube channel in 2024, Davis lauded the performances of the Class of '92, and claimed that the longevity of their success is what sets them apart from the rest.

Speaking in April 2024, the 67-year-old said: "Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Williams are really exceptional, weird people. Which one of the three of the Class of '92 are going to crack up first?

"They are so good, and they've been so good for so long that they've given us the opportunity to enjoy which one of them is going to crack up first."

Davis claimed Higgins would be the one to fail first given his lack of "weirdness", adding: "The other two are enigmas. You can’t understand Ronnie O’Sullivan and you can’t understand Mark Williams. How is he still winning? It’s stupid."

Davis' previous comments may turn out to be true as Higgins bows out of the World Snooker Championships at the hands of Williams - and O'Sullivan is still well in contention.

He will aim to come out the winner of his battle with Jiahui on Wednesday to reach the semi-finals, with the late session kicking off at 7pm.

Awaiting him is set to Zhao Xintong. Williams, meanwhile, will either face Judd Trump or Luca Brecel in his own semi showdown later this week.
