Five-century Judd Trump issues statement in round one win at the 2025 World Snooker Championship

World number one Judd Trump put on a break-building clinic as he sailed through to the last 16 of the 2025 World Snooker Championship after a straightforward 10-4 first round victory over Zhou Yuelong on Wednesday night.

2019 Crucible title winner Trump - who is aiming to join a very exclusive club of multiple-time World Champions - sets up a mouth-watering round two meeting with Shaun Murphy.

Trump arrived at this year’s blue riband snooker event as the runaway leader of the world rankings, and was guaranteed to finish the season on top, regardless of what happened in Sheffield before a ball was struck. The 35-year-old Englishman was also the pre-tournament favourite with the bookmakers.

It has already been a very memorable season for 'The Ace in the Pack' with trophy lifts at the Shanghai Masters, Saudi Arabia Masters, and the UK Championship, although these successes came in the first half of the campaign.

His attendance at this year's World Championship means that Trump has banked over £1.5 million in prize money this season, with his sights set on pocketing the £500,000 top prize come early May Bank Holiday.

Heading into the round one match, Trump held a positive 5-0 head-to-head record against Zhou in ranking competition, and it was the number two seed who pulled rank early on as breaks of 93, 61, 117 and 62 helped him to a 5-1 lead.

Zhou was making his third appearance at the Crucible, but his first in six years. The world number 32 won two of the final three frames of the first session - including a run of 95 in the ninth - to keep in touch at 6-3 behind overnight.

Resuming the following evening, though, Trump came out of the blocks like a train, fashioning efforts of 113, 114 and another 114 in consecutive frames to reach the hill at 9-3 up.

Three-time ranking event finalist Zhou claimed frame 13 to break his opponent’s streak and take the tie to its final mid-session interval, but Trump soon completed the job with the help of exactly 100 in the fourteenth frame.

The display of power scoring was a record-equalling one by Trump; five is the record high amount of century breaks made by one player in a Crucible first round match. Ronnie O’Sullivan, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Allen are the other players who have achieved this feat.

Trump's incredible five-ton haul pushes his seasonal tally of century breaks on the professional circuit to 98. He requires only two more in this tournament to reach 100 100s, and bank a £100,000 bonus.

Only twice has a player compiled a century of tons inside a top tier snooker season - Neil Robertson made 103 during the 2013/14 term, and Trump himself hit the landmark in the 2019/20 season, eventually making 102.

Shaun Murphy denies Daniel Wells in high-quality affair

Earlier in the day, number 15 seed Shaun Murphy wrapped up a 10-4 victory over Crucible debutant Daniel Wells to keep his hopes alive of a second world title, 20 years on from his first.

There was a fantastic standard throughout the round one match, with each player constructing a hat-trick of century breaks.

Reigning Masters Champion Murphy did the bulk of the damage in the first session as contributions of 64, 63, 100, 57, 138, 76 and 89 aided him to a commanding 7-2 advantage - Wells' two frame wins featured breaks of 131 and 109.

Returning the next morning, Murphy made it 8-2 before three-time ranking event semi-finalist Wells reduced his arrears to four frames along with runs of 115 and 68. However, breaks of 133 and 71 in frames either side of the final mid-session interval contributed to Murphy's progression.
