Kyren Wilson vows to copy Ronnie O'Sullivan and could leave fans disappointed

Kyren Wilson has pledged to copy Ronnie O'Sullivan and skip more tournaments

Kyren Wilson has vowed to be more like Ronnie O'Sullivan in a move which could frustrate snooker fans and leave them wanting more. Wilson is still smarting from his early exit at the World Snooker Championship, where he became the latest victim of the Crucible curse. He was narrowly beaten by Lei Peifan in the opening round in what was arguably the tournament's biggest shock.

The match went to a deciding final frame but Wilson crumbled under the pressure as Lei held firm to claim the spoils. O'Sullivan was on punditry duties and claimed that Wilson may have played too much snooker before heading to the Crucible. The Rocket suggested that he might have felt the consequences of spreading himself too thin.

Wilson has since vowed to emulate O'Sullivan by taking more breaks to ensure that he is ready to perform when it really matters. However, such a move could frustrate snooker fans who want to see the best players square off at every tournament.

"I think definitely I’ll take a leaf out of his book," Wilson told Metro. "I think you want to stay hungry. You want to keep enjoying it.

"I think if you slog it out and you go tournament, tournament, tournament, tournament, it almost becomes too repetitive to the point you stop enjoying it. Whereas if you give yourself a little break, you’re like, oh, you know, I miss it, I really want to get back to it.

"And I think that’s something he’s been very clever with over the years. That’s something I need to look at doing for the future of my career to kind of get the best out of me at the right times."

Wilson also revealed that O'Sullivan phoned him after his Crucible heartbreak and gave him some words of advice, which he really appreciated.

"It was really nice of him to give me a bit of support afterwards,’ added Wilson. "I’d done an exhibition in Macau over New Year’s. I got back, I went straight into the Championship League, won that group.

"I got straight into the Masters final and then went straight to Germany, won that, then went straight into the Championship League again and I lost in the final of that. We spoke at that time actually and just had a little chat about it.

"In hindsight, maybe I should have just skipped the Championship League, although I wanted to keep winning because I know I’m playing well and I think I can win. You’ve just got to rest your mind at certain times and maybe that was the time."
